As Ds106 Comes to and end…

Final Summary!

Oh Ds106, this has been a memorable semester for sure. I have learned so much coming out of just this one class, and I can honestly say this class has taught me more of what I will be using in the real world than almost any other class I have taken throughout the years at UMW. I have become more confident in myself creating videos, creating audio, and coming together as a group (of people whom I have never met before) and creating a product that we should all be extremely proud of ourselves. I have come out of my comfort zone numerous times this semester, and oddly enough this class had taught me to do so outside of school, which I find to be pretty amazing.

 This week especially has been extremely fun. I got to take a character that I have watched over 9 seasons of One Tree Hill and always wondered to myself if the show were still on today, what would Brooke Davis still be doing? Where would should be in her life? And with this class, I got the chance to create that myself, which was memorable to say the least. Mrs. Polack, you have been an amazing teacher and so helpful throughout all the assignments, obstacles, questions and concerns. You never failed to give clear direction on what you wanted from us, yet gave all of us the opportunity to do our best. Ds106 storytelling is by far my favorite class at UMW, and I will definitely take everything I learned and use it, probably almost daily, as the semester comes to an end.

Video Assignment

To complete my final project I chose to do a video of pictures and other video clips of who and what Brooke Davis has made of herself from the time she started filming the first episode of One Tree Hill, to the made up afterlife of Brooke after the finale of One Tree Hill was aired. I chose video clips that highlighted important, life changing and memorable times throughout her life. I wanted it to show the type of person Brooke Davis is, and threw a quote in there stating “Behind every successful woman is herself” because it seems that fits her perfectly. She never gave up as her character in One Tree Hill, with her love life, schooling, cheerleading and clothing line. This quote took her where she got invited to the biggest fashion show ever, New York Fashion Week. She is the reason she became as successful as I made her turn out after the show.

I used Freemake video converter to create this video from the pictures and videos I decided to use. I added each and every picture/video I wanted to use first, then I made sure the option to join files together was “on” so that I could transform everything into one video and have good transitioning as well. I also used the editing button to cut out the parts of the videos I chose, to just the minutes or seconds I wanted that showed off Brooke and who she was. After all the editing was complete, I went to the top toolbar and clicked convert, and chose the option Mp4 and chose okay, which automatically converts this video to a video that can be opened up with any software and save to my computer.

Runway Mix

Mashup Assignment

For one of Brooke’s final steps of preparation for her big day was creating a playlist for her part of the fashion show. I decided to create a music mash up clip of what the music would be like at the show. I didn’t want to make it an hour long mashup mix because that would bore anyone who was reviewing this, and I know it would not get listened to. Therefore, I made it short enough to get the idea of what types of songs will be played. The few songs I did choose, I didn’t want there to be a lot of words if any played, because I was more focused on the beats instead of the songs having words to keep the attention focused on her clothes and the models at the runway show.

I went to YouTube, and searched for runway instrumental music and listened to a variety of clips before deciding which to use in the mashup. I then downloaded the music clips I wanted to use, for this assignment I used 4 just to give everyone an idea of what the music would be like. After downloading each music clip to my computer.

I opened up Audacity and opened each clip individually, under the file tab and then clicked on “open”. After opening each one of the four clips, I cut and pasted each one to have them play one after the other. I then used the effect option at the top of the toolbar and chose fade in and fade out option to create a smooth transition between songs. After editing it completely I saved it and uploaded it to soundcloud.

Web Assignment

A HUGE part of Brooke preparing for her time on the runway, she had to think of what outfits she wanted to show off, what hair styles she wanted the girls to have and how their makeup would be done. These were all the thoughts I had while I was creating the “Clothes over Bros” board on Pinterest.

I already had a Pinterest before completing this assignment, so I just added to my many boards, a new one of what preparations needed to be done and decisions needed to be made for Brooke’s big day. I went through many hairstyles and makeup ideas and decided which ones would look best and work best with the clothing that was going to be shown on the runway. I also added some outfit choices that would be shown off. Once I found the pictures I wanted to add to the board, I clicked on the “Pin it” button, and then chose the board I wanted it to go to, which was the Clothes over Bros board and clicked okay. It was as simple as that, and I am sure the board of Brooke’s ideas will continue to grow as her days come closer to the fashion show week she has always waited for.

Design Assignment

The website banner was the start of something new for Brooke Davis. She had a website before the big news she received from the invitation, but nothing that could be shown to the fashion world. I chose pictures that would represent what Clothes over Bros, as a company, is, and who Brooke Davis is as a person. I included a picture of her first Clothes over Bros store, the infamous logo of the clothing line, some sketches she drew, and a picture of herself. An important picture to me that I put into the banner, was the one of Brooke wearing a shirt that reads “0 is not a size” which is a bold statement, and a statement I feel all girls, women, boys and men should know, and be comfortable with.

I put the collage together in MS Paint because this banner was nothing more than a collage of the pictures I chose to represent Brooke and her company. If it were to have needed more detail or shapes, I definitely would have used a picture editing application or a collage maker, but I felt it was just as easy in MS Paint. The one thing I did a lot of was copying and pasting of the pictures to get them in the right places where they would line up perfectly and no part of any picture would get cut off. Ultimately this was going to be the banner of her new website, and it had to be something someone would be proud of.

After reminiscing on the postcard from here past, I thought it was a great idea to have an invitation in the mail a few days later that would change Brooke’s life…forever. I created an invitation  to none other than the world famous New York Fashion Week. The thought of Brooke being invited to New York’s Fashion Week, not just as a guest, but to show off her very own clothing line would be the game changer in her life. When deciding on the design of the invitation, I knew it had to be black and white and nothing to bright or obnoxious because that is not what fashion week is all about.

To create the invitation, I also used MS PowerPoint because I have templates saved in the program that I thought would be a perfect for a classy invitation like this one. It has the small details that I was imagining and is mostly black and white. I wanted the words “New York Fashion Week 2015” to stand out from the rest to bring the immediate attention to that. After the attention was brought to that, I then went out and typed up the rest of the invitation and put it into a cursive font to make it fancier than original font, and also used just the right amount of words to not lose interest while reading, but to give enough information out. This invitation would lead to the creation of Brooke getting ready for her big day!

Using a postcard from the past was a great opportunity to spark Brooke Davis’ motivation to fulfil those dreams of hers, and to never give up. I made the postcard a lot about what my final project story was shaping into because I didn’t want to have just a random postcard of no meaning to just show up in my storyline. I used MS PowerPoint to create the postcard. I chose a background design that I loved, simple and classy. I then changed the font to a somewhat cursive-looking font, to make it look handwritten and not just typed up in 10 minutes. I also made up a random address, making sure the location was where One Tree Hill actually took place, in Tree Hill, North Carolina. For the stamp, I got a stamp clipart from Google, and inserted onto my postcard to make it seem as if it were going to be sent back in the day.

This was a relatively easy assignment, but I didn’t choose it for that reason. I felt as if this played a strong role in my story of who Brooke Davis made of herself after One Tree Hill was over, and her dreams were still being sought. Also, remembering the hundreds of episodes I watched of the show, Brooke Davis was definitely a writer when it came to feelings, especially when it came to Lucas Scott during her high school days, ha! She wrote her dreams and thoughts and feelings on paper, so what’s nothing better than reminiscing a memory from the past?

Visual Assignment

I chose three pictures that I thought summed up a relationship that summed up Brooke Davis. Honestly, this was completely easy. My final project was going to be about Brooke fulfilling a lifelong dream of having her own clothing line, making her own clothes, and presenting them at a fashion show. So of course, I chose a picture of Brooke Davis, since the relationship was about her, a photo of sketches she had made for the clothing line, and then the name of her clothing line, Clothes over Bros, on the wall at her store.

To create this three-framed photo, I used Fotor, which is a picture editor as well as a collage creator application. I chose the three photos that I wanted to use for the frame and opened them up into the app. I then used the photo stitching option on the right hand side which allowed me to align the photos side by side, or up and down; I chose the side by side option. I changed the outline color to black, and I rounded the edges of the pictures to give it an edgy side, because if anyone has watched One Tree Hill, or is just a Brooke Davis fan, we all know she is completely on the edgy side. After I was content with my editing, I saved the frame and this became “Love: In Three Frames”

These frames show who Brooke Davis was towards the end of the series, One Tree Hill. Her love was for fashion; not only fashion but her own clothing line, “Clothes Over Bros.” She took that fashion line that she always dreamt of while she was in high school, and went far beyond her wildest dreams. When the series ended, nobody knows what all happened with Brooke Davis and her clothing line, but this starts off by showing her love and passion of fashion and her clothing line.

I took this assignment, and made it as if Brooke Davis were to open this letter after the series finale of One Tree Hill was over. She opened this and realized her dreams have yet to be accomplished, and she will be dammed if that dream of having her clothes shown during New York’s Fashion Week doesn’t happen. She reads over this postcard, and it gives her the determination to keep on going with her clothing line, far beyond the set of One Tree Hill, but to make herself proud, and her family proud. Little did she know, an invitation was right around the corner?

Days after Brooke Davis opened that postcard she had written to herself more than ten years ago while she was in high school, she received a black and white invitation, one she had never seen before. She opened the envelope and was shocked, completely dumbfounded at what was waiting for her inside of it. It was an invitation to New York’s Fashion Week 2015. Her dreams are finally coming to reality, and VOGUE wants her clothing line, Clothes Over Bros, to be shown off to the fashion world during next year’s fashion week. She instantly grabbed that postcard from the other day, and read over what she had written; she now knows some of the many steps she needs to take to make this opportunity all that she wants it to be.

It’s that time that Brooke Davis starts sprucing up her website, and she feels as if she needs to create a new banner that captures that attention of all viewers. She wants the picture to be of what she loves doing and of what her clothing line is all about. Brooke Davis thinks this will be the first step to making her clothing line get BIG in the fashion world. It is time to make it classier, and not keep it at the high school days of Clothes Over Bros, but to the new age.

After creating her new and improved website, Brooke Davis moved onto to creating her dream vacation, which to here is Fashion Week. This will be a board of what all she wants done for her time on the runway. She added make up ideas, hair ideas, and the clothes she wants to be shown during fashion week 2015. This Pinterest Board is where Brooke Davis will continue to add her makeup, hair, and fashion ideas for her time to shine next year. As more ideas come and go, she will provide tons of ideas for all who are there to help out during probably one of the most stressful times, yet the best experience Brooke Davis will have.

 Music Mash 

It’s music time! Brooke Davis now needs to put together a combination of music that she wants the models to walk down the runway to. There won’t be music with any words, but more of just the beats to music, so the attention won’t be taken away from the models and the clothes, but Brooke wants the music to go with her clothing line and to still keep the attention to the stage and not all around while her clothes will be walking down the infamous runway for the first time.

Where Are They Now?

Now that Brooke Davis has finished preparing herself for her HUGE day on the runway, this video shows where she is now, and steps of her journey along the way. She never gave up on her dream of having her own fashion line and making her own clothes. Now that One Tree Hill is over, this is where Brooke Davis is now…making herself a fashion icon and fulfilling her lifelong dreams.

My Summary

These past two weeks were extremely exciting considering the only though of a “remix” I had before this was hearing a song on the radio that was considered a remix. I never really put any more thought into what a remix or mash up could actually be other than the compete obvious of someone putting a spin on a song that is already out to the public. After watching countless hours of videos and completing assignments as well as looking over other classmate’s assignments, I have a better understanding of it all now.

Pretty much, EVERYTHING is a remix. No one thing in this world is made of just that (well at least not that I know of). Every single object has different parts to it which consider it as a mashed up object to me. Another example I thought of is myself. I am both a remix and a mash up of my mother and father. I am considered an original to some people. but in all honesty I am not… I am some of my mom and some of my dad in another body. As each and every other person in the world are.

It is actually intriguing to think of all the aspects that go into every day objects that I wouldn’t have cared about or even thought about before. After listening to what other peoples’ thoughts and ideas of remixes and mash ups are, everywhere I go I end up looking at things differently and my mind wonders for a while just thinking about what made that the way it is today, or how did that plant get the way it looks? Weird and interesting thoughts, but definitely brain teasers nonetheless.
